Avatar: The Last Airbender was written and created by two Americans: Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. It is an American animated television series.

The series itself is not just based on one culture. It is derived from East Asian influences and western culture. However, the series uses a large amount of Chinese history, art and culture, while using Japanese anime design.
